A Report On The C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of The 2017 Seminar On Diplomacy And Protocol For South Sudan

Interpreting has become increasingly significant in globalization,which serves as a bridge for international exchanges and foreign aid projects.Foreign aid projects provide China with an important platform to promote cultural exchanges with other countries and regions.Sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of PRC and organized by the Fujian Economic and Foreign Trade Official Training Center,the 2017 Seminar on Diplomacy and Protocol for South Sudan as one of the foreign aid projects,especially the African aid projects,has exerted active influences on establishing a good relationship with international community as well as promoting economic and social development in African countries.Meanwhile,interpreters have played an active role in helping the foreign aid projects conduct smoothly.The Adaptation Theory was first put forward by Belgium linguist Jef Verschueren in 1987.Verschueren proposes that using language must consist of the continuous making of linguistic choices,while the variability,negotiability and adaptability make the continuous making of linguistic choices possible in language use.Such four angles of investigation as structural objects of adaptability,contextual correlates of adaptability,the dynamics of adaptability and the salience of the adaptation processes are designed to understand the meaningful functioning of language as a dynamic process operating on context-structure relationships at various levels of salience.In the process of interpreting,it is inevitable that interpreters need to make linguistic choices in accordance with specific contexts so as to achieve fluency and to attain communicative goals.In the 2017 Seminar on Diplomacy and Protocol for South Sudan,the author undertook the interpreting task for the lecture of the Interrelation between Infrastructure and Economic Development.The report,guided by the Adaptation Theory,will conclude and analyze the difficult points and fine interpreting examples and thus put forward coping interpreting strategies correspondingly by listing typical examples.The case analysis of the interpreting for the lecture is conducted from such four perspectives as structural objects of adaptability,contextual correlates of adaptability,the dynamics of adaptability and the salience of the adaptation processes.Thus,it is proposed that interpreters should be well prepared when accepting an interpreting task by acquiring relevant information and knowledge about the task.Meanwhile,interpreters are required to make appropriate adaptation and use flexible interpreting strategies correspondingly so as to satisfy various communicative needs.What’s more,interpreters are expected to enhance the understanding of the target audience of the source language by offering logic links like cohesion and coherence for the differences between English and Chinese.Interpreting coping strategies and note-taking are conducive to reducing short-term memory load and achieving smooth and satisfactory interpreting,which interpreters should make full use of.At the end of the report,suggestions are proposed from three aspects such as pre-task preparation,interpreting process and task evaluation in the hope of enhancing the quality of field interpreting.In addition,this report is aimed to provide a reference on how to improve the interpreting quality for African aid projects.
