Interpreting, as a special form of translation, is drawing more and more attention. With China’s more and more frequent interaction with the rest of the world, especially in the field of politics, there is a higher demand for more qualified interpreters in the Press Conference-Interpreting (PCI). Word-for-word interpreting affects the normal communication between China and the outside world. Therefore, in order to complete the interpreting task of the press conference successfully, the study of interpreting strategies and skills is of practical value. This thesis is written on the basis of Adaptation Theory which was proposed by Jef Verschueren. With premier’s press conference of2013as the corpus, the author intends to study the application of Adaptation Theory in the interpreting of the press conferences by comparison of the personal practice and the official versions. Jef Verschueren argues that human beings are able to make choices in the language use. The Theory of Adaptation analyses the dynamic process of language use. Interpreting transfers information from one language to another, which provides the possibility for the application of the Adaptation Theory in interpreting. Several interpreting theories are more or less based on experience without solid theoretical foundations. Thus, this thesis aims to explore some proper interpreting strategies of the press conference from a pragmatic perspective. It is hoped that the study can provide some guidance for the interpreters in the interpreting practice.
