An Interpreting Report On Online Forum "Enhancing Resilience Of Adolescents And Youth During And Post COVID-19 Scenarios" Under The Guidance Of The Interpretive Theory

The Interpretive Theory proposes that translation is all about interpretation and the interpreter should not pursue equivalence in linguistic units but in meaning.The hypothesis of deverbalization is one of the most important insights in this school of thought,which bears far-reaching significance on development of interpreting.Under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory,this paper will be built on the material of the author’s interpreting practice on an online forum held by an international organization Save the Children.In this thesis,problems in stages of comprehension and deverbalization will be analyzed and a set of translation techniques according to a classification model of deverbalization in English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting will be promoted after a comprehensive case study.After introduction to task profile and general reconstruction of the interpreting practice,difficulties in comprehension and deverbalization during the process are discussed on all fronts.In the stage of comprehension,confusion brought by Bangladeshi accent and ineffective discourse comprehension during keynote and closing speeches are the main obstacles.As for the stage of deverbalization,redundancy in language,ambiguous expressions and expressions with Chinese characteristics cost tremendous efforts of the interpreter.In the light of these problems,this paper has summarized characteristics of English in Bangladeshi accent and carried out a thorough analysis on difficulties in discourse understanding caused by the accent and in deverbalization of repeated information as well as rich featured expressions.Coping solutions corresponding to each problem have also been put forward,helping improve practical guidance from the Interpretive Theory on interpreting.According to the study,in the stage of comprehension,technique of generalization can help with the interpreter’s command of messages,reducing risk of mistranslation of detailed information.Besides,anticipation can lighten the interpreter’s cognitive efforts and guarantee natural flow of interpreting.In the stage of deverbalization,classification model of deverbalization in English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting,including criterion of reformulation,elaboration,connection,and innovation,is referred to.Technique of restructuring indicates reordering of units of sense or sentences,maintaining balance between faithfulness and fluency.With more explanation or illustration,technique of supplement can convey the complete sense from abbreviated information.Conversion of connections benefits for clearer logic.Last but not least,technique of recreation can build the interpretation in a more idiomatic way.
