| The report chooses Premier Li Keqiang‘s Press Conference on 28 th,May2020 to conduct Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.The content of Premier Li‘s responses includes the Chinese government‘s efforts for reviving China‘s economy,strengthening anti-epidemic measures,ensuring people‘s livelihood,stimulating employment and promoting opening-up policy,etc.It shows China‘s remarkable achievements in containing the pandemic and endeavors of restoring orderly economic and social activities.The original material comes from a press conference that involves so many topics that people could have a general understanding of China‘s domestic affairs and international landscape.As a master of language,Premier Li is skillful in employing simple,vivid and accessible words.He is well versed in presenting a credible and detailed narrative with data.In this regard,deverbalization proposed by the Interpretive Theory from a French scholar Danica Seleskovitch in 1978 is helpful.It refers to base on source language comprehension,the interpreter can transcode the words and retain the essential meaning of the speaker,and then reconstruct and spread them in the target language.By employing deverbalization,this report will explore three questions through case analysis:(1)How to deal with Chinese political and economic phrases,culture-loaded words,and idiomatic phrases?(2)Given that there are many run-on sentences and long sentences with a host of sub-sentences in the source text,how to work on semantic implication and a large amount of information with them?(3)How to interpret the words and expressions unprepared?The report finds that deverbalization can help the present author find solutions to interpret accurately in a rather short time and cope with difficult situations.For better applying the strategy of deverbalization within limits,the present author conducts quality control at the stage of pre-task preparation and task implementation.Pre-task preparedness can ensure good output,which includes theoretical basis preparation,glossary building,sight interpretation of parallel texts,and mental and physical preparation.In implementing the simulated task,the present author listens carefully,remembers key points of the source language as much as possible in her heart,and resorts to her notes as a reminder to refresh her short-time memory.While delivering her output,the present author manages to analyze her notes,follows the logic of the speaker,and be prepared to make self-corrections.The report proves that it is effective for the strategies of semantic interpreting to deal with Chinese political and economic phrases,culture-loaded words and idiomatic phrases;reformulation to work on sentences with implicit logic,information-intensive sentences,and zero-subject sentences;simplification to cope with remove redundancy and unprepared terms.By taking the above means,the present author effectively controls the boundary of deverbalization,ensuring the quality of the simulated interpreting task. |
