In Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpreting, there are occasions where the speaker has the speech all written out beforehand, yet the script is not provided for the interpreters. The interpreters then may face multiple challenges:First, the speaker, having the script in hand, may read out the script at an unusually fast speed, which increases information intensity making interpreters hard to follow. Second, when writing the speech, the writer may fail to consider the unique requirements of oral expression. The speech then may take a formal written style with complex syntax and exquisite word choices, adding to the difficulties facing the interpreters.This thesis aims to study what strategies interpreters should employ under such circumstances. In the thesis, the Interpretive Theory of Translation is applied to an empirical study to explore the effects and significance of deverbalization, a key construct in this school of translation studies, in interpreting such speeches. It raises two questions:First, in interpreting speeches of a formal written style, is the degree of deverbalization positively correlated with the fidelity of one's rendering? Second, is the degree of deverbalization positively correlated with the quality of one's rendering?In the empirical study, in order to evidently manifest the characteristics of formal written style speeches, an excerpt of How China Sees Russia written by Fu Ying was recorded to serve as the material of this experiment. Seven interpreters took part in the experiment, and special attention was given to the cases in their renderings where there was deverbalization, the fidelity of their renderings, and the quality of their renderings. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, it is observed that there is a positive correlation between the degree of deverbalization and rendering fidelity and also between the degree of deverbalization and rendering quality. It is also noted in the qualitative analysis that interpreters'understanding of the source language and expression competence in the target language may affect comprehension and reformulation procedures in interpretive translation and consequently affect the quality of their renderings.
