Disfluencies In Chinese To English Consecutive Interpreting

In recent years,the Chinese government has taken a series of foreign aid policy measures to promote agricultural development in developing countries.Ranking the first among the seed industry in China with comprehensive strength,Yuan Longping Agricultural High-Tech Co.,Ltd.especially established the International Training Institute to undertake national foreign aid training.This report is based on the author’s self-reflection on the phenomenon of disfluency during her career as an interpreter for the Training Course on Hybrid Maize Comprehensive Technology for Developing Countries 2019 at Longping High-Tech.In the report,the author analyzes her own interpretation cases,divides disfluency in the interpretation process into four categories:pauses,modifications,filler words and repetitions,and concludes the four main reasons for them:lack of language ability,insufficient self-monitoring,inadequate preparation of terminologies,and lack of background knowledge.At the same time,four strategies to avoid disfluency are put forward:improving language skills,strengthening self-monitoring,expanding terminologies and enriching background knowledge.The innovation of this report lies in:phoneme repetitions are analyzed additionally in this report while former researchers only analyzed repetitions of words,semantics and syllable.Hopefully this report can serve as a feasible reference for interpreters of foreign aid programs to avoid disfluency in interpretation and improve the quality of foreign aid training programs.The limitation of this report is that the number of corpora selected is small with only typical disfluency phenomena in the author’s 33-minute interpreting record analysis.In future research,the number of corpus is expected to be expanded so that the research can be more scientific.
