| The ultimate goal of interpreting is to help stakeholders to communicate and understand each other.Frequent disfluencies in interpreting make the audiences confused, even, irritated, thus, offer no help to promote understanding and communication.Human brain can carry out a limited number of operations and keep only a limited amount of information available for processing at a given time. But interpreting requires a lot of mental energy,so,disfluency occurs. To avoid disfluency in interpreting, the author did a case study based on the mock conference Urbanization: Global Trend and China’s Problem and identified 4 types of disfluencies, namely filled pause, unfilled pause, repeats and self-repairs.The author finds that 3 factors contribute to the disfluencies, first, inadequate preparation, second, lack of self-monitoring,third,inefficient use of interpreting strategies. The author proposes 3 strategies: first, interpreters should be well prepared. They are expected to collect and memorize the key phrases. They are also suggested to do researches about the theme of the meeting and the background of the speaker.Second, interpreters shall conduct a special training session to monitor the disfluencies and have more interaction including eye contacts with the audiences.Third, interpreters are supposed to take the differences of languages into consideration to restructure the source language.Given the cultural gap, they are expected to make hidden links and meanings explicit. |
