Disfluency In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpretation And The Coping Strategies

Disfluency is common in language production.Interpreting has multiples steps including listening,notes-taking,reading and producing,thus there are also many disfluencies in interpreting.Fluency is one of the measures of the quality of interpreting.Disfluencies of interpreting will affect the listener’s reception of information.And at the same time, interpreters will feel nervous when confronted with the problem of disfluencies.Therefore,interpreters need to tackle the problem of disfluencies.This thesis is a case study based on the ENCY 481^st meeting mock forum.The author analyses four types of disfluencies,naming repetition,repairing,verbal fillers and pauses.Then the author lists several causes of the disfluencies,including invalid notes-taking, insufficient background knowledge,absence of self-monitoring and lack of first-language proficiency.Finally,the author points out the solutions to disfluencies in interpreting.
