This translation report excerpts chapters 2-5 of Life After Carbon as the source text.Life After Carbon is an urban planning text, which has plenty of terms, long sentences and is well organized with clear logic.Life After Carbon aims to introduce the ideas on urban planning innovation to the target readers. Therefore, the translator chooses Skopos Theory as the guidance theory of this translation. This report analyzes the linguistic features of the source text from lexical, syntactic and textual aspects. The translation difficulties of the source text in lexical, syntactic and textual levels and the translation methods used to resolve those difficulties are discussed under the guidance of skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.Based on the case analysis,it can be found that the annotation of terms and proper nouns in the source text and the conversion of part of speech could improve the readability of the translation;the flexible translation of passive sentences, the division, explication and reconstruction of long sentences are conducive to making the translation more in line with Chinese habits;and the flexible translation of logical relationships in the textual level could improve the quality of translation of urban planning texts. This report proves the effectiveness of Skopos Theory in guiding the translation of the source text, and the translation methods discussed in this report can provide useful reference for the translation of urban planning texts.
