A Report On The Translation Of Handbook Of Offshore Oil And Gas Operations (Chapter 2)

The source text of this translation report is from Handbook of Offshore Oil and Gas Operations(Chapter 2).Shannon’s information theory is adopted as a guide to explore the practical implications of this theory in the translation of scientific and technical texts.Petroleum-related scientific and technical texts are specialized,concise and have less redundant information.In the C-E Translation of such a text,the source text inevitably has some lengthy and complex structure.These imbalances on redundancy need to be adjusted so that the readers of the translated version can receive the information efficiently and accurately.Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the source text,this report proposes translation measures for the specific problems from three levels: lexical level,syntactic level,and discourse level,combined with the information theory.The specific practice of determining the meaning of words based on redundant information is discussed at the lexical level,the ways of adjusting the sentence structures are analyzed at the syntactic level,and the omission of “noise” and the addition of translation in accordance with Chinese reading habits are explored at the discourse level.It is expected that this report can help expand the application of information theory in the field of translation and provide references for later translation.
