This report summarizes the difficulties encountered and strategies taken in the process of translating Section Six to Section Eight in Part Ⅲ of Friends and Relations.Written by Elizabeth Bowen, one of the most outstanding female writers in the 20th century, the novel mainly narrates a story of two wealthy sisters’ marriages which are changed forever by a love affair.Their moody emotions make their marriages complicated, with each having to deal with the conflicts between family ties and personal desires. The novel’s descriptions are implicit and poetic to some degree with rich artistic conception, and the specific images are often used to show the characters’ mental states. In the process of translation, the most challenging problem for the translator was to reproduce the linguistic and stylistic features of the source text under the premise of guaranteeing the readability of the target text. The theory of Translator Behavior Criticism considers the dual roles of the translator as a "linguistic being" and a "social being," combining intra-translation and extra-translation factors. It guides the translator who translates such expression texts as novels to center on the source text and the author to reproduce the original features and consider external factors including the translator’s purpose to adjust the acceptance of the target text.Hence the translator adopts addition, annotation, and conversion of parts of speech at the lexical level, splitting, recasting, and following the source sequence at the syntactic level, and cohesion and coherence at the textual level. This translation practice shows that the translator should be "invisible" when translating literary novels, staying truth-seeking to the style and artistic conception of the original work and utility-attaining to the readers by making appropriate adjustments to ensure the readability of the translation when there is a big difference between the translation and the ways of expression of the target language.
