A Report On The Translation Of Such A Fun Age(Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Translator Behavior Criticism

The source text is an excerpt from American writer Kelly Reid’s Such a Fun Age.In this book,a black babysitter Emira took her white employer Alix’s two-year-old daughter out,and she was mistaken by the supermarket security for kidnapping the child.Since then,Alix had decided to help this black babysitter.This is a story about race,class,marriage and love.It’s a novel with many psychological and language descriptions and vivid character images.It also has lots of cultural vocabulary.The translator needs to ensure their readability and literariness.These are the difficult points of this translation practice.This report is divided into five chapters,selecting Chapters 2 to 4 of the original text,about 1,2000 words,as the research objects.The first chapter is task description,including brief introduction to the original author and the source text,as well as its linguistic features.Chapter 2 discusses three stages of the translation process.Chapter 3 is the theoretical basis,introducing the development and important concepts of Translator Behavior Criticism,and explaining the feasibility of "Truth-seeking" and "Utility-attaining" in guiding this translation practice.Chapter 4 is the case analysis with corresponding translation strategies.At the lexical level,the translator applies transference,annotation,four-character words,and modal particles.At the syntactical level,the translator applies division on relatively long sentences,sentence order adjustment and conversion between actives and passives.At the discourse level,the translator applies addition and concretization based on plot and context.Meanwhile,"Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation also guides the analysis of this report.Chapter 5 is the translator’s self-reflections after this translation practice.Through this translation practice,the author deeply realizes the important role of"Truth-seeking" and "Utility-attaining" in guiding novel translation practice.In novel translation,following the principle of "Truth-seeking being the base with Utility-attaining as the aim",the translator can effectively adopt different translation strategies to deal with some translation difficulties.As a result,the translator can accurately convey Kelly Reid’s idea,reappear its writing style as much as possible,enable readers to receive better reading experience,and better comprehend the racial discrimination color expressed by the original text.
