Abstract/Summary:
Sorcery Reborn is a magic novel written by British author Steve McHugh in 2019.The novel tells the story of the protagonist,Nate, who has lost his powers and fought against his enemies. It draws lessons from Greek,Roman and Nordic mythology, and vividly depicts the fighting scenes with simple language. Many words about magic and words and sentences with a hint of magic in the text are highlights in the whole novel. The first three chapters of this translation practice report briefly introduce the author, original text, translation process and guiding theory. The fourth chapter is case analysis, which is the main content of the report.Under the guidance of Translator Behavior Criticism, the translator’s behavioral dispositions in the translation can be divided into three states:"truth-seeking" orientation,"semi-truth-seeking and semi-utility-attaining" and"utility-attaining" orientation, and the reasons why these behavior dispositions have appeared also analyzed.During the translation, how to retain the image of the original text and make the translation conform to the habits of the target language is a great challenge the translator has faced, therefore, the author used "Truth-seeking" and "Utility-attaining" in Translator Behavior Criticism to guide the practice, and achieved truth-seeking of the image in the original text, made the translation easier to understand and practical for readers. The fifth chapter is the conclusion and self-reflection,and puts forward the requirements to the later study of translation theory and practice. In addition to guiding translation practice,Translator Behavior Criticism also can be a tool to analyze the translation. The thesis found that the translator has striven for a balance between the"truth-seeking" and "utility-attaining" as much as possible in the process of translation. But under the guidance of "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" evaluative model of continuum based on Translator Behavior Criticism, the translator’s behavior of "truth-seeking" is manifested as "truth-seeking" orientation, and the translator’s behavior of "utility-attaining"as "untility-attaining" orientation, and,of course,"semi-truth-seeking and semi-utility-attaining" and other intermediate states are also included, which shows the various gradual characteristics of "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" evaluative model of continuum based on translator behavior, and illustrates the complexity of the translators and the translation process.Through this translation practice and theoretical analysis, the author hopes to combine his own translation practice and the guiding theory to provide new ideas and methods for the translation of magic novels.
