A Practice Report On The Translation Of 2018 Conocophillips Annual Report(Excerpts)

This translation practice takes as the source text the 2018 ConocoPhillips Annual Report(Excerpts,hereinafter,the Annual Report),which is published by ConocoPhillips International Petroleum Co.,Ltd.The Annual Report is divided into four parts,i.e.,the company’s profile,operating mechanism,financial data and disclosure analysis of market risk factors.It covers knowledge in business and has a strong professionalism,and requires accurate translation and expression of market and financial related views,which the translator is not familiar with and therefore requires much research and preparation in advance so as to give a translation with adequate accuracy.The text has a certain practical significance.In the process of translation,the translator strives to improve the cohesion and readability of the translation on the basis of loyalty to the original text.This translation practice report analyzes the problems encountered in the translation process and offers corresponding solutions to them.The translator divides her problems encountered in the process of translation into three categories:sentence,discourse and lexical translation.Under the guidance of "Skopos theory",this paper takes into consideration the textual features and the skopos of the Report,and analyzes the translation difficulties and problems encountered,and proposes corresponding solutions to the three categories of problems.With much self-reflection,the translator hopes her competence in translation can be improved,and her experience might be helpful for future translators of similar texts.This translation practice report is divided into six chapters.The first chapter is introduction;the second chapter details the translation task;the third chapter describes the process of this translation task,including the pre-translation preparation,translation process and the definition of my translation problems;the fourth chapter proposes the problems and difficulties encountered in the translation practice from three aspects,including the translation of long sentences,text cohesion and coherence,and the translation of common words and phrases in business texts;the fifth chapter proposes three types of solutions to the three translation problems in the previous chapter,namely:the translation method of long sentences,the solutions to text cohesion and coherence problem,and the skills for common words translation in business texts.At the same time,theoretical thinking was given to the translation problem.The sixth chapter is the translator’s summary of the translation task,including the gains,experience,and problems and deficiencies in translation practice.
