A Report On The C-E Translation Of In The World (Excerpts) On The Basis Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As one of the few recently-published epics reflecting the economic and social development of China,In the World is rich in both cultural and realistic significance.From the perspective of the hero Zhou Bingkun,it tells the stories of three generations including his parents,peers and children,documents the struggles of ordinary people to realize their desire for happy life and depicts the transformations of the Chinese society and ups and downs of people’s life during the past five decades.It is of great help in introducing China’s reform and opening-up and encouraging the spread of Chinese culture.Therefore,the translator selected chapter two and chapter three of the first part of In the World as his translation material.This report summarizes basic methods of translating culture-loaded words and serial-verb sentences via in-depth analyses of typical cases in light of Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.In terms of the translation of culture-loaded words,the translator ought to have a comprehensive understanding of the source text,dig up its connotation and flexibly adopt translation methods like paraphrase,transliteration and idiomatic translation to deliver accurate information to target readers.With regard to the translation of serial-verb sentences,the paramount task is to analyze the constituents and the deep structure of them and figure out the chronological and logical relations of different actions.Then the translator can adopt conjunctions,prepositions,participles,clauses as well as translation techniques like combination and division to make the translation cater for the features of target language and reading habits of target readers.It is the translator’s sincere hope that this report could offer a little reference to the future translation of the same type of texts.
