| Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out(2006),as a novel that explores the relationship between Chinese farmers and farmland is deeply loved by Western readers because of its unique language style.Therefore,this thesis attempts to analyze the translation of Culture-loaded Terms from the perspective of functional equivalence theory that focuses on receptors’reactions.The basis of functional equivalence theory is an in-depth analysis of culture and language.Through the thesis,the author attempts to generalize the feature of various translation methods in dealing with various culture-loaded terms and to find out how functional equivalence theory could guide English translation of culture-loaded terms in folk literature.Based on Nida’s classification of culture and the language characteristics of the original novel,the author classifies the culture-loaded terms and builds a C-E parallel corpus of culture-loaded terms.Through the labeling of culture-loaded terms,the author counts the number of words of various types and collects their corresponding translation methods.Through both qualitative and quantitative analysis,the thesis mainly has three findings.Firstly,Nida’s analysis of language and culture lays a theoretical foundation for the translatability of culture-loaded terms.And functional equivalence theory can be used to measure whether the translation is expressed naturally in the target language.Secondly,linguistic culture-loaded terms account for 39%of the total culture-loaded terms,which is the most common category in the novel.As typical folk literature,Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out contains rich cultural elements of language.Social culture-loaded terms are the most epoch-like words,which are closely related to the background of the times.Thirdly,for most of the culture-loaded terms in the novel,the translator tends to use literal translation,liberal translation and transliteration.What’s more,the translation always combined with other methods like addition,alteration and omission. |
