In today’s world,political and economic development is rapid.At the same time,cultural soft power is gradually being taken seriously.In the current fierce international competition,cultural competition occupies an extremely important part of it.“When our cultural perspective is global,the identification with local culture and the choice of future development direction become the first issues to be addressed”.Chinese documentaries have emerged in recent years with a large number of excellent works,and the English interpreting of documentaries has been increasingly valued.Excellent documentaries have been interpreting into English and accepted by the majority of the world’s people,providing a brand new bridge for Chinese culture to go global.This practice report is based on a simulated simultaneous English to Chinese interpreting of the documentary Su Dongpo,which is based on Su Shi,the famous literary scholar,calligrapher and painter of the Northern Song Dynasty.The documentary has a strong Chinese literary flavour,combining poetry and images in a perfect way,and has been described by the State Administration of Press,Publication,Radio,Film and Television as “a re-presentation of a person and a long-simmering past that is a thousand years away,as if people can see a living Su Dongpo in front of them”.The selection is linguistically distinctive,easy to analyse,and involves a certain amount of terminology and cultural background knowledge in the field of literature,which requires a high level of interpretation skills and knowledge in the relevant fields.Su Dongpo is divided into six 180-minute episodes,which focus on Su Dongpo’s tumultuous life.In this report,the interpreter uses the American interpreter Nida’s theory of functional equivalence as a theoretical basis to analyse the linguistic characteristics of the interpreting task,the difficulties caused by culturally loaded words in interpreting,and the application of functional equivalence theory to specific interpreting practices.Through the analysis of the results of this documentary interpretation,the interpreter uses examples of relevant English interpreting techniques in the case,such as linearing,augmentation and phonetic interpreting,and also discusses how to achieve lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence and chapter equivalence in documentary interpretation through the analysis of specific cases.Guided by the theory of functional equivalence,this practical report is divided into four parts.The first and second parts are the task description and the process of the task respectively,in which the main content and process of this interpretation task are described in detail.The third part is devoted to interpreting theory and related case studies.The theory is combined with examples to focus on some of the problems that arise in the process of interpreting culturally loaded words.In this part,the interpreter explains in detail the causes of the problems and their solutions,and at the same time,lists some practical interpreting methods.The fourth section discusses how to achieve functional equivalence in documentary simultaneous interpreting through case studies.The final section concludes with a summary of the end of the interpreting practice.In this section,the interpreter summarizes the problems arising in the interpretation process and the related solutions,with a view to laying a solid foundation for more in-depth research in the future.Through this interpreting practice and report writing,the interpreter has accumulated the skills and methods of using functional equivalence theory in specific interpreting,and strengthened its application,which provides a guiding direction for the interpreter’s own progress in interpreting learning,and hopefully provides a learning reference for other interpreting learners.
