This report is based on the author’s translation of Fates and Furies as the analytical text.As one of bestsellers of New York Times,Fates and Furies takes the marriage of the hero and heroine as the mainstay, and elaborates it from their perspectives respectively. With precise and vivid dictions, colloquially local expressions, free manipulation of rhetoric devices such as metaphor, irony and oxymoron, and subtle psychological descriptions,Groff was able to reveal the complicated inner feelings of the characters, and inform the readers of the Americans’ views on marriage.Given the rich cultural connotation in the source text and the restraint of the multi-dimensional objective information that the translator confronted in the translational environment, this report takes the theory of Eco-translatology as the research perspective.According to the theory, translation equates the translator’s selection to transplant the text after his adaptation to the translational environment. Thus in the translation process, the translator should at first adapt to the language, cultural and communicative ecology of the original text in his eco-translation environment, then give full consideration to linguistic expression habits and cultural background of the target readers, and make necessary selections to preserve the language style, the characters’ unique discourse styles, and the rhythm of the original text as to convey the characters’ psychological conditions. This report firstly gave a brief introduction to the reasons to choose the candidate translation text, the textual features, the design of translation process and the necessary preparation before the translation task;then briefly elaborated the core concepts of eco-translatology and its translation principles; Then carried out a deep analysis to the translator’s adaptation and selection in the three dimensions including language, culture and communication through case studies. In the end the enlightenments from the translation task and the difficulties the translator came across in the translation process are presented. As the conclusion the report pointed out that compared with other translation theories,eco-translatology,featured with a macroscopic and systematic perspective,is able to objectively describes the crucial role played by the translator in the translation process, and recounts multidimensional and multi-layered factors translators have to confronted in their adaptation and selection. This theory can explain the complexity of literary translation in a holistic viewpoint and open up a new horizon for literary translation.Meanwhile, the translators should understand the significance of translational environment in translation, and adhere to a holistic view to carry out adaptation and selection in the the cultural, linguistic and communicative dimensions, and take relentless efforts to realize "the ideal degree of integrated adaptive selection" in literary translation.
