Nowadays,English teaching in rural junior middle schools has not yet paid sufficient attention to how to cultivate students’ basic language skills like reading aloud.Consequently,students are often found difficult to read aloud a single piece of text,properly and smoothly.Against this background,this thesis focuses on the problems of reading aloud in English teaching,and taking as an example a rural junior high school in Ganzhou city where the researcher is working as a teacher,investigates the current situation of English teaching in terms of reading-aloud and discusses how reading-aloud practices work in English teaching.Through an investigation of the current situation,this study came to find that:(1)from the teachers’ perspective,the teaching method of reading-aloud is unitary,and they have neither had awareness of or little time on how to instruct students to read aloud,nor arranged any time for students to read aloud.(2)students being weak in English and their reading levels being low,they have not shown high interest in reading English aloud,their ways to read aloud are very passive,and their self-confidence insufficient.Accordingly,this study employs a comparative analysis to investigate how reading-aloud teaching practice are to be undertaken in the two classes of Grade-8(G-8)in the rural junior high school under investigation,focusing upon the effect of different reading aloud modes on students’ reading proficiency.The analysis and results show that:(1)some positive changes have occurred in the students’ attitudes to,interests in,and ways of reading-aloud,as well as their confidence in and levels of English learning,(2)positive changes have also taken place in the teachers’ attitudes toward and time allocated in their instruction of reading-aloud,and that(3)in the classes under investigation,the instruction and practice of reading-aloud have proved to work effectively.Based on the above,the following teaching suggestions in reading aloud are put forward:(1)as a simple but effective way to level up English study,the practice of reading-aloud should attract both teachers and students’ attention,(2)teachers can help improve their students’ reading proficiency by creating certain situations for reading-aloud practice through modern educational technology and employing group coopetition and appropriate strategies in reading aloud,and(3)just as English learning is a process of long-term adherence,any increase in the level of reading proficiency is worth combing in-class and after-class practices and long-term persistence.
