Literary works are a representation of language arts.In literary works, writers often use the language deviating from the norm to attract readers’ reading interest. The concept of foregrounding first stemmed from painting, which refers to putting a certain parts important in a prominent position in the painting. This position is also called foreground.Afterwards,Russian formalism introduced this concept into literature.Literary works are more than just conveying specific information. The way how to express is also significant. Therefore, the foregrounding has become an aesthetic style and writing technique favored by many writers. As scholars at home and abroad continue to advance their research on the concept of foregrounding, the concept of foregrounding was gradually introduced into the study of literary translation by the beginning of the 21 st century.Translation theorists and translators have gradually begun to pay attention to the reproduction of the foregrounding languages in the translation.Jia Pingwa,a noted modern Chinese writer,is good at using foregrounding languages to represent Shaanxi’s rural culture.Fu Zao is Jia Pingwa’s first full-length novel. This work fully reflects Jia Pingwa’s language characteristics. And foregrounding languages are also clearly reflected in this novel. The foregrounding language can fully reflect the literariness and artistic characteristics. However, the use of a lot of foregrounding languages in Fu Zao also poses significant challenges for translators.Based on the concepts of "qualitative foregrounding" and "quantitative foregrounding" developed by Leech and Short, and the functions of foregrounding languages in the literary works, the thesis analyzes the different foregrounding languages with text analysis in Fu Zao by Jia Pingwa. Also, the thesis analyzes the translation methods of different types of foregrounding languages in translation used by Goldblatt Howard, who is a famous American sinologist and translator;it alsoanalyzes and evaluates the translation effect of his translation of foregrounding languages. After analysis,it can be found that Jia Pingwa uses many "qualitative foregrounding" and a few "quantitative foregrounding" in Fu Zao.The former mainly included dialectal deviation, semantic deviation, lexical deviations, and deviation from the historical period. The latter contains repetition and parallelism. In Turbulence,Goldblatt restores the literariness and artistic quality of the original language to the greatest extent by adopting various translation methods. In order to reproduce Jia Pingwa’s writing style, highlight the personality characteristics of the characters and the stylistic features of the novel,Goldblatt adopts transliteration,word-for-word translation and literal translation to highlight the form of foregrounding languages in the target text.Due to the different background culture of English and Chinese languages, some foregrounding languages can’t be faithfully reproduced in the target text, including dialectal deviation, semantic deviation, and lexical deviation. Therefore,Goldblatt uses liberal translation, shift and omission in order to ensure the readability of the translation and deliver the basic information.
