| This report is based on the translation of an excerpt(Chapters 1-5)from the debut work The Water Dancer,a black American novel by the African-American writer Ta-Nehisi Coates. The report mainly summarizes problems and major difficulties in the translation of the novel and sums up the translation strategies and methods of foregrounding language in African American novels.Based on the source text of this translation report, the author will discuss the transference of foregrounding language features in translation from the perspectives of syntagmatic and paradigmatic foregrounding, which are also called deviation and parallel structure respectively.Syntagmatic foregrounding is mainly divided into phonetic deviation, grammatical deviation, semantic deviation, vocabulary deviation and rhetorical deviation, while paradigmatic foregrounding mainly refers to the use of repetition or parallelism in vocabulary, sentences or texts to achieve a prominent effect.Foregrounding theory has been fully developed in the field of stylistics, but there are few studies on its integration with texts in the field of translation studies. In the process of writing, the author analyzes foregrounding language based on the characteristics of the source text, and finally summarizes the problems of the foregrounding language in the translation process and their corresponding solutions, hoping to provide ideas for the translation of the foregrounding language in black American novels in the future. |
