Abstract/Summary:
As one of Chinese avant-garde writers,Yu Hua is globally well-known and acclaimed for his unique writing style. In his works, special artistic effects have been achieved through foregrounding techniques. This phenomenon is also obviously reflected in his novel Chronicle of a Blood Merchant.Theoretically, foregrounding belongs to essential concepts of literary stylistics, and has been widely applied in studying English translated works. With the assistance of the theoretical basisqualitative foregrounding and quantitative foregrounding brought forth by Leech and Short, the author of this thesis is going to analyze foregrounding items in the English version of Chronicle of a Blood Merchant(translated by American scholar Andrew F.Jones),and summarize the adopted translation principles and methods, hoping that it can provide certain inspiration for the research of Chinese literature translation. The author of this thesis makes attempt to answer these questions: First, how did the translator deal with qualitative foregrounding and quantitative foregrounding in the progress of translation? And what are the effects? Second, what translation principles did the translator follow? Finally, when it comes to different kinds of foregrounding, what translation methods did the translator adopt? After in-depth case studies and detailed descriptive research,it is clear that: A lot of foregrounding techniques were used in the original novel, such as lexical deviation, dialectal deviation, semantic deviation, repetition as well as parallel structure. It is also found that many foregrounding items were well preserved in the translation, but some of them were inevitably omitted by the translator, leading to the loss of foregrounding effect and even misunderstanding among foreign readers.Besides, the translator followed the equivalent effect principle and acceptable principle, endeavoring to reserve foregrounding effect in the target language. When it comes to qualitative foregrounding, the translator preferred to choose free and literal translation;while quantitative foregrounding, omission and repetition were favored.
