A Report On E-C Translation Of The Origins Of Himalayan Studies(Chapter 7 And Chapter 8)

Under the guidance of Eco-translatology put forward by Professor Hu Gengshen,this report studies the translation of Chapter 7 Brian Hodgson and the Mammals and Other Animals of Nepaland Chapter 8 A Pioneer of Himalayan Ornithology of the book The Origins of Himalayan Studies.The selected chapters are the main descriptions of Hodgson’s findings on mammals and birds in the Himalayan regions.There are a large number of animals and birds involved in this book,which are characterized by many terms and strong professionalism.It is found that the main difficulty in the transformation between the source text and the target text lies in the linguistic,cultural and communication dimension,which requires the translator not only to make adaptive selection and transformation based on the clear understanding about the linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English,but also pay more attention to the purpose of communication and show the communicative intention of the source text as much as possible.Guided by Eco-translatology,the translator adopts different translation methods to solve the difficulties in different dimensions.On linguistic dimension,in order to reproduce the language habits of the target language and adapt to the reading habits of the target text readers,the translator makes transformation by conversion,inversion and the change of passive voice to make the translation readable for target readers.In terms of cultural dimension,the translator adopts the combination of literal translation and footnote as well as free translation to remove the cultural barriers.On communicative dimension,the translation techniques including annotation,amplification,affirmative and negative transformation are employed by the translator to highlight the writing purpose of the source text.The translation report aims to give some enlightenment to the further translation practice and study of zoology.
