An Eco-translatological Analysis Of Qingcheng Zhilian From The Perspective Of Adaptation And Selection

Eileen Chang,one of the most eminent writers in the 20 th century,has made prominent contributions to the history of Chinese literature.Qingcheng Zhilian,one of her great works,is translated by the American scholar Karen S.Kingsbury,which attracted many scholars to research it from various perspectives except for eco-translatology.This thesis selects Karen S.Kingsbury's translated version of Qingcheng Zhilian as the objects of research,and attempts to make an analysis of the translator's translational eco-environment when she translated Qingcheng Zhilian.Moreover,the thesis also tries to make a detailed analysis of the translator's adaptations and selections from the dimensions of language,culture and communication.At the linguistic level,the author has mainly explored Kingsbury's version from three different levels containing the lexical level,syntactic level and rhetorical level,and found that Kingsbury has adopted different kinds of translation skills to embody her selections,such as alliteration,end-rhyme and kinds of translation methods like literal translation.At the cultural level,Kingsbury has also employed different strategies including foreignization and domestication,moreover,she has made a combination of the two strategies in rendering Chinese idioms and culture-loaded terms.At the communicative level,Kingsbury has mainly adopted a translation method called transliteration while transforming characters' names and kinship address for the purpose of catering to the target readers' cultural expectations.Although Kingsbury has endeavored to make her adaptations and selections while translating,it is inevitable to lose some meanings of the source text on account of the cultural differences between Chinese and English.
