Lead-in is the beginning of teaching in one class.An excellent lead-in is conducive to the smooth development of subsequent teaching activities.The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 edition)states that teachers should arouse students’ interest at the beginning of one class and pave the way for the subsequent teaching content.A successful lead-in can attract students’ attention and improve teaching efficiency.However,in real class,due to the pressure of exams,the lead-in of one class is sometimes neglected.In this thesis,the research subjects are the students and teachers in Zhengzhou No.47 Middle School and the theoretical basis includes constructivism learning theory and affective filter hypothesis.The purposes are to investigate the current situation of lead-in in junior high school English class,discover the current problems of lead-in,analyze the causes,and propose measures to improve the effectiveness of lead-in.Research questions are as follows:(1)What are the methods and functions of lead-in in junior high school English class?(2)What are the attitudes of students and teachers towards lead-in of English class in junior high school?(3)What are the factors that affect the design of lead-in in junior high school English class?In order to better play the role of lead-in and further improve the quality of teaching,the study of lead-in in junior high school English class was conducted through classroom observation,questionnaire and interview based on the studies of lead-in at home and abroad.The research results are as follows:(1)At present,the lead-in methods used in junior high school English class mainly include lead-in by revision,lead-in by multimedia,lead-in by questions,current affairs introduction,brainstorming introduction and direct lead-in.The functions of lead-in in junior high school English class include enlivening the classroom atmosphere,establishing a connection between new and old knowledge,helping students understand the teaching content and promoting students’ understanding of new knowledge.(2)Most students consider that lead-in is necessary and do not like classes without any lead-in.They think that lead-in is beneficial to improving teaching efficiency and are willing to participate in this section actively,but some students hold that lead-in is a waste of time.Basically,all the English teachers think that lead-in is very important,but sometimes the lead-in is neglected because of the limited time.Almost all teachers understand the purposes of lead-in,but not all of them can achieve the purposes of lead-in in class.(3)The factors that influence the design of lead-in mainly include the types of lessons,teaching content and the needs of students.Different class types have their own suitable lead-in methods.The content of lead-in should be properly related to the teaching content.By investigating the current status of lead-in,this research not only helps teachers and students to reexamine the lead-in of one class but also brings some implications to the design of lead-in in junior high school English class.
