This is a translation report on the book English as a global language by the British linguist and writer David Cristo. To be more exact, what is translated in this report comes from Sections 8 to 12 of Chapter 4 and Sections 1 to 2 of Chapter 5 of the book which mainly describe the reasons why English has become the world language and introduce the origin of English, the cultural foundation of English, the status of English in the world and its prospect. This book can help readers not only to understand the impact of language on cultural exchange and the development trend of different languages in an era of globalization, but also to think about the impact of English as a global lingua franca on the Chinese society. The author of this thesis mainly applies the theory of text typology put forward by Catherina Reiss to the translation practice.Reiss classifies texts mainly into three types, namely informative text, expressive text and vocative text.Based on Reiss’ theory, the author establishes the principles and standards of the translation practice, and uses a number of examples in the translation report to illustrate how she flexibly adopts different methods to achieve the intended objectives. At the lexical level, the author tries to make her translation as clear and accurate as possible by using methods such as extending the meaning of words and phrases,by converting the part of speech etc.At the syntactic level, the author uses translation methods such as combination of literal and free translation and amplification to make her translation as logical and coherent as possible, and to make her translation conform to the usage of the target language.Through this translation practice, the author has studied the translation methods of informative texts, has acquired some skills to deal with cultural information in translation, and has further improved her translation ability. At the same time, the author feels that she still has a long way to go in terms of understanding the original text and expressing in the target language.
