With the development of globalization,Chinese universities and educational institutions have carried out various kinds of cooperation with other countries. One of such cooperation is to exchange teachers with foreign universities to provide short-term training programs.Due to the differences in languages and cultures, and to ensure the quality and progress of teaching, classroom interpreting has played an essential role in such short-term training programs. This report, based on the author’s classroom interpretation of sight singing and ear training course taught by an American music professor in Guangxi Arts University from November 25 to December 6,2019,finds that the Interpretive Theory can play a role in guiding classroom interpretation in the field of music.According to the theory, the process of translation / interpretation is divided into three stages: comprehension, deverbalization, and reformulation or re-expression.Deverbalization is extremely important among all the stages and is the significant innovation of the Interpretive Theory which makes it different from earlier translation / interpretation theories.Deverbalization means that a translator /interpreter should focus on the facts, concepts and events conveyed by the language rather than the sound and form of the language. The author analyzes the problems encountered in the course and the on-spot interpretation from three aspects of vocabulary, sentence and discourse, using the triangular model of the Interpretive Theory.Through the analysis,it is found that: At the lexical level, professional terms, idioms and proverbs cannot be interpreted literally without understanding of their real meanings,so it is necessary to accurately grasp the meanings in professional fields and specific contexts before interpreting. At the syntactic level,an interpretershould not stick to the original sentence pattern, but should flexibly apply the methods of omission and addition according to the intended meaning of the speaker. At the discourse level,an interpreter may need to give explanation or soften the tone according to the needs of the audience. An interpreter should consider the specific content and situation to decide what methods should be adopted, which needs further exploration. On the basis of reflecting on the on-spot interpreting, this report tries to further improve the original version and also aims to provide some reference for the interpreters in their practice and research of classroom interpretation in sight singing and ear training. |
