A Report On Escort Interpreting Of "2019 Training Course On Information Technology For Samoa"

The foreign-aid program is one of the specific carriers of China’s diplomatic policy and the training programs cover various subjects including information and technology,which is crucial to demonstrate China’s scientific and technological strength and promote other countries’ development in this regard.During this process,interpreting serves as a bridge,facilitating the communication and concerning the success of the program.The source text of this thesis derives from the 2019 Training Course on Information Technology for Samoa,relating to the visits to five IT-based companies in Wuhan.The reason why the author chooses these interpreting materials is that they are difficult and require full preparation.Due to differences in Chinese and English and cultural backgrounds in technological development,the interpreter should focus on the sense instead of the original linguistic forms and accurately convey the true meaning of the speaker to achieve effective communication.This accords with the ideas of Triangular Model of Interpretation put forward in the Interpretive Theory which is therefore chosen as the guiding theory of the interpreting practice.This paper first introduces the background and features of the interpreting practice and then summarizes the pre-interpreting preparation,interpreting process and post-interpreting quality control.The Interpretive Theory will be introduced as the theoretical basis and the interpreting difficulties are classified according to the three language levels proposed in the theory,including interpreting of technological terms,numbers,and proper nouns at lexical level,long and complicated sentences at syntactical level,and information redundancy and information inadequacy at discourse level.Then,solutions are put forward based on the Triangular Model of Interpretation,or the three procedures of interpreting,namely,comprehension,de-verbalization and reformulation.The author,by following the three procedures and resorting to methods such as asking for further information,notetaking,amplification,omission,conversion and etc,has successfully overcome the problems.Although the author has found solutions for the problems mentioned,she still needs to keep on enhancing interpreting skills by expanding knowledge reserve,strengthening English listening comprehension ability and improving short-term memory to perform better in her future practice.The author hopes that this thesis could provide enlightenment to future interpreting research and to those who are interested in interpreting.
