An EST Practice Report On E-C Translation From The Perspective Of The Adaptation Theory

In the context of contemporary information sharing and rapid technology dissemination,premium translations and high-quality translators can present scientific research results and innovations to the world accurately.In particular,the translation of innovative sci-tech papers can contribute to scientific research development and technological progress in related fields.Therefore,the social and economic value created by sci-tech papers can not be underestimated.The source text of this translation project is selected from an IEEE journal(the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).Guided by the Adaptation Theory of Jef Verschueren,the translation project has been completed in time.The source text Application of Big Data and Machine Learning in Smart Grid,and Associated Security Concerns: A Review,is a sci-tech paper which has many sci-tech language characteristics.With the guidance of the Adaptation Theory,the translator analyzes translation strategies in detail from four aspects: words,passive voice,attributive clauses,and discourse.The translation of words,especially the conversion of word class,emphasizes the differences between Chinese and English expressions;the use of passive voice highlights the objectivity of English for science and technology;the attributive clauses in the source text can be translated by adopting the translation strategies such as division and combination;the translation of discourse has showed the structural adaptation between the source language and the target language.Professional background knowledge as well as long and complicated sentences in sci-tech materials cause certain difficulties in the translator’s work.Therefore,translators should master certain professional knowledge and translation skills.By completing the translation practice of Application of Big Data and Machine Learning in Smart Grid,and Associated Security Concerns: A Review,the translator has a new perspective on translation work.The translator should require not only certain professional knowledge and translation skills but also adequate pre-translation preparations.In this translation practice,adequate pre-translation preparations have greatly improved translation efficiency.I hope this report will provide some reference for other translators in analogical translation.
