A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Sci-Tech News From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

In history, science and technology make immense impacts on life. Nowadays, science and technology play a more prominent role in our life. Accordingly, the demand for sci-tech information is ever increasing. English is the most widely used language in the globe. Hegemony of English is overwhelming in texts of sci-tech news. Thus, it is beyond doubt that importance be attached to translation of sci-tech news.This report, from the perspective of adaptation theory, analyzes the translation of sci-tech news. According to adaptation theory, using language must consist of the continuous making of linguistic choices, consciously or unconsciously,for language-internal(i.e. structure) and/or language-external reasons. Translation, as a type of language use, is a process of dynamic adaptation at different levels of extra-linguistic or linguistic elements. In the case of sci-tech news translation, adaptation should be conducted at different levels of extra-linguistic or linguistic elements. Specifically, adaptation at cultural level can be achieved by domesticating translation. As for logical level, adaptation is completed via rendering implicit logical relations into explicit ones. In regard to lexical level, literal translation, explanatory translation and conversion of parts of speech solve the problems of acronyms, neologisms and common words respectively. As to syntactic level, sequence reshaping, division translation and chorological translation handle long sentences; change of voice copes with passive voice; and order rearrangement deals with appositives. As for rhetorical level, literal translation fulfills the adaptation of simile, metaphor, personification and parallelism. For the discourse level, adjustment to the development of Chinese paragraph should be made.Hopefully, this report could provide references and suggestions for homogeneous translation of sci-tech news.
