An Application Of Catford’s Translation Shifts Theory In C-E Translation Of Papers On Shape Strip

As China’s backbone industry,steel has always been a substantial basis for developing national economy and defense.Since the reform and opening-up,China’s demand for steel has been surging with the rapid development of economy and technology.The overcapacity of steel industry raises people’s requirements for the quality of steel.Therefore,the existing technologies become mature through plenty of practice and innovative technologies keep emerging.On basis of the above,the State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation(RAL)vigorously develops innovative technology as well as improving advanced technologies from abroad.So far,RAL has yielded a great quantity of scientific innovative achievements,among which RPS is a typical one.Rapid development of technology triggers fierce competition which then hastens frequent technical exchanges in which translation plays a vital role.The translated material consists of three papers which are to be submitted to international journals.Different from literature translation,scientific translation is highly professional.And the author ran into many problems,such as the translation of terminologies,conveyance of objectivity and the sentence structure of scientific papers.To solve these problems,J.C.Catford’s translation shifts was chosen to guide the whole translation process.This thesis is divided into 5 parts.Chapter One gives a general introduction of research background and significance.Chapter Two contains two parts.The first part lists all preparations made before translation which includes the preparation of translation tools,textual analysis,the comparison of parallel texts,feasibility study and schedule creation.And the second part describes the whole translation process.Chapter Three and Chapter Four are the main body of this thesis.Chapter Three discusses J.C.Catford’s translation shifts from level shifts(plural&singular forms and tense)and category shifts(structure-shifts,class-shifts,unit-shifts and intra-shifts.)In chapter Four,the author integrates theory with practice through applying translation shifts to the translation of papers on plastic processing and carrying out detailed analyses of different examples.The author believes that shifts theory plays a guiding role in the translation of papers on shape strips after analyzing different examples.However,the theory has its limitations in that the biggest translation units it can be applied to are sentences in most cases.Therefore,mechanical application should be avoided in different conditions.
