Based on the translation practice of Value Chains and Market Access for Aquaculture Products, the thematic paper of the Fourth Global Conference on Aquaculture, the report is intended to analyse the phenomena appearing during translation and forms a summative conclusion.Considering the text type, linguistic features, and purpose of the material translated,Catford’s translation theory is chosen as the main guiding theory. In addition, taking into account the limitations of Catford’s theory, the views of several other scholars on translation shifts are also introduced as a supplement to guide the choice of translation methods at levels other than the lexical and syntactic ones.Catford’s theory takes the concept of “shift” as its core, which refers to departing from formal correspondence in translation, arguing there are two major types of shifts: level shifts and category shifts. The report is intended to analyze the guidance of translation shifts theory for academic texts.By discussing shifts occurring at various levels, the possible categories of shifts in the translation of academic texts and the solutions to the translation difficulties caused by text features are summarized. It’s found that translation shifts theory is applicable to the translation of academic texts, especially for issues like lacking cohesion in compound sentences, nominalization, and ambiguous expressions.
