With the acceleration of globalization, international cultural exchange is becoming increasingly frequent. As a special carrier for Chinese culture transmission, literature plays a crucial role in sino-western communication,so increasing significance is attached to literary translation. As distinguished contemporary writer,Mo Yan is the first Chinese to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. The translations of Mo Yan’s works can promote the understanding of Chinese culture for Western readers and also contribute to the “going global” of Chinese literature works.White Dog and Swing, with plentiful territorial dialect,is a short novel written by Mo Yan in his early days. The concept of “Gaomi Northeast Township” first appears in this novel. Therefore, the author selects Mo Yan’s White Dog and Swing as the research text to investigate the translation strategy in literary translation.Proposed by Vemeer(1978),Skopos Theory emphasizes different purposes in the process of translation. In other words, this theory means to produce a text in a target setting for a target purpose and target addressees in target circumstances. It emphasizes that translation is not only a transformation of linguistic symbols but also a comprehensive communicative process involving the recipient of target language. Therefore, taking White Dog and Swing as an example, this thesis analyzes the characteristics of the text language according to the reader-centered principle and selects translation strategies to produce the translation that meets the target reader’s expectations and their communicative needs as much as possible. It hoped that this study provides a new perspective for studies on translation strategies of Mo Yan’s works, and presents a reference for the combination of Skopos Theory and literary translation. The thesis firstly summarizes previous studies on Skopos Theory and the translation of Mo Yan’s works.Furthermore, the thesis presents the background, development and main arguments of Skopos Theory and analyses the feasibility of translation of White Dog and Swing guided by Skopos Theory.Next, the thesis analyzes the translation standards of Mo Yan’s works based on Howard Goldblatt’s translation practices. Finally, the thesis puts forward specific translation strategies under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Through the analysis of specific examples,it is hoped that this study can provide a new perspective for studies on translation strategies of Mo Yan’s works and present a reference for promoting the “going global” of Chinese culture.
