A Study On Translation Strategies Of Mo Yan’s Literary Works From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

The study is based on the translation of The Herbivorous Family,one of Mo Yan’s literary works.The text type of the work belongs to expressive one.Text type influences the translation strategies adopted.However,besides text type,the translator’s role,purpose,and social-cultural pressures also influence the choice of translation strategy.The thesis is intended to study translation strategies of literary works from the perspective of Skopos Theory by taking into consideration of the text type,the translator’s purpose,and the translation action as a whole.In the translation,purpose-driven translation strategies based on in-depth analyses of the source text were adopted at the lexical,syntactical,and textual levels from the perspective of Skopos Theory to cope with translation obstacles and difficulties.For example,addition,subtraction,and conversion at the lexical level were adopted to make the expression smoother in the target text.Domestication,foreignization,and verse remaking were used at the syntactical level to make the target text expression more flexible.Rewriting,recreation,and balancing were applied at the textual level to make the target text more understandable and acceptable.In the study,it can be noticed that Skopos Theory is of practical value in literary translation.From the perspective of Skopos Theory,literary translation should be based on the connotation and denotation of language,linguistics,and culture inside and outside the text,considering the translation purpose,the target outcome,and the message transmission involving intercultural transfer.Appropriate translation strategies should be adopted at the lexical,syntactical,and textual levels to achieve the set translation objectives and expected effects.In the translation and research,specific translation strategies and applications are discussed based on the principles and applicability of the theory.Although the translation strategies are just studied in the translation of The Herbivorous Family,it is hoped that the study will provide some references for translating similar literary works.
