| The Interpretive Theory was born in France in the late 1960s,and it caused a massive sensation in the interpreting community as soon as it was proposed. This theory focuses on the study of interpreting process.Traditional interpreting theories usually hold that the interpreting process has two steps, namely, comprehension and expression, while the Interpretive Theory proposes to divide the interpreting process into three steps:understanding,de-verbalization,and re-expression.Among these steps,"de-verbalization" has attracted much attention, which makes people realize that the core of interpreting is the explicitness of meaning.Under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory, this report selects Oprah Winfrey’s 2019 commencement speech at the University of Colorado as the material of interpreting practice, analyzes the problems that arise in the practice of interpreting and proposes corresponding interpreting strategies.Such effort aims to figure out the guiding role of the Interpretive Theory in the practice of interpreting. This report consists of five parts:The first part briefly introduces the background of the study, the speech and its speaker;the second part aims to introduce the interpreting process in detail;the third part mainly introduces the theoretical framework of this thesis, namely the Interpretive Theory;the fourth part,as the core of this report, analyzes some typical cases from the perspective of the Interpretive Theory;the last part summarizes the interpreting practice, and provides some suggestions and references for interpreting learners or students who may use the Interpretive Theory to analyze their interpreting tasks or projects in the future. |
