English teaching should cover the cultivation of students’ listening,speaking,reading and writing skills.In the past,foreign language teaching often focused on students’ ability to take exams,primary school English classrooms mostly focused on practicing words and sentence patterns and explaining grammar.Under the influence of education reform,it is becoming more and more important to cultivate English reading ability.Students formally begin to learn English starting from the lower grades of primary school,laying the foundation for future English learning.And reading ability will become more and more important in future English learning,therefore,the cultivation of good reading habits and interest in English learning at the primary school level will have a significant impact on future English learning.At the same time,the quality of English reading ability will also affect the development of the three English skills of listening,speaking,and writing,reading ability is enhanced,and the other three aspects of skills will naturally be improved.Therefore,in the initial stage of students’ exposure to a second language,foreign language teaching should pay particular attention to the reading ability of lower primary school students."Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards(2011 Edition)" sets the goal for middle and lower grades of primary school to "understand,read,and tell small stories with the help of pictures.Therefore,how to integrate pictures and texts in primary school English teaching is very important to achieve teaching goals English picture books have the characteristics of rich forms,bright colors,vivid pictures,and standardized language.Because lower-grade students of primary school do not have the learning foundation of second language,it is very difficult for students to become interested in learning English if English teaching is limited to text explanations.English picture books are very good teaching resources,students can understand the meaning of picture books by reading pictures,at the same time,they can learn authentic English expressions,which has the effect of killing two birds with one stone.Therefore,if teachers can make good use of resources such as English picture books and combine teaching goal,they can achieve good teaching results.This study took A primary school in Jiangdu District,Yangzhou City as the research object,which lasted three months.Uses questionnaires,interviews and classroom observation methods to understand the current situation of primary school English picture book teaching,analyzes its problems and reasons,and gives corresponding countermeasuresThe investigation found that:(1)the teaching value of English picture books has been generally recognized by front-line teachers,but because picture books are a new thing,teachers have not done much research on this,and their understanding of picture books is not accurate enough.Under the pressure to entering a high school,it is easy to fall into the misunderstanding of emphasizing the text over the image.(2)In terms of teacher teaching,there are fewer lessons in the English classroom at the primary school level,and the teachers themselves have heavier teaching tasks,it is difficult to take the time to study English picture books.(3)The teaching picture books are selected by the teacher,many of them are just to meet the teaching theme of the textbooks,they do not choose the picture books for teaching according to the local conditions of the students’ physical and mental development,so they can not mobilize students’ interest in learning.Picture book teaching does not have a certain feedback mechanism to feedback learning results,students lack corresponding reading guidance and do not study in depth,which makes it difficult to obtain learning results,and leads to picture book teaching in a formal way.According to the above survey,the author proposes improvement strategies:the physical and mental development characteristics and the reading interest of students are important criteria when teachers select picture books for teaching.Teachers should strengthen reading guidance for students,abandon the traditional combination of mechanical sentence pattern drills and far-fetched scenarios,with teachers as the mainstay and students as the main body,use perception,understanding,and interaction between teachers and students to effectively achieve the "input" and "output" of students’ English language learning,while promoting students ’natural language acquisition,students’ good character can also be realized in natural penetration.
