In the context of New Curriculum Standards, the English reading ability of primary school students has received more and more attention, and what follows is the increasing emphasis on how to teach reading in primary schools. However, due to the impact of old teaching concepts and teaching conditions, classes with a large number of students and a series of practical problems such as the lack of reading materials in English, primary school English reading teaching faces a great challenge. As independent reading materials,English picture books, which play the important role of cultivating children’s reading ability, should not be underestimated. The illustrations in picture books are lively, the language is simple and easy to understand, the themes are plentiful, and the plot is full of fun.Compared with plain text reading, picture book reading is more intuitive and the image is consistent with the cognitive and psychological characteristics of pupils. As more and more educators and teachers recognize the values of picture books in English learning,English picture book reading teaching practice has been widely carried out.But how to turn English picture books into valuable teaching resources? Is there any effective English picture book reading model that can be used by teachers? These are the research topics worth exploring. This study aims to find a suitable model for English picture book reading teaching, and to explore whether this model is effective in improving students’ English reading achievement as well as meeting their perception.Based on this,an experimental research lasted for four months was conducted.94 Grade Five students from two classes were involved in the experiment and they were divided into experimental group and control group. In the experimental class, the three-world picture book reading model introduced by Baird and his colleagues(2015)was adopted, and in the control class, the bottom-up reading model was practiced. The results show that there exists a great difference between the experimental group and the control group in students’ reading achievement. The finding suggests that the three-world picture book reading model is effective in improving students’ reading achievement. In the experimental group,a questionnaire survey was carried out to find out students’ perception of using picture books in the reading classroom. The results show that students have great interest in picture book reading and they all believe that their English reading ability is improved. The results from case analysis provide more relevant data to show the effectiveness of using picture books in English reading. The implications of this study on primary school English picture book reading teaching are:(1)The three-world picture book reading model can be great assistance to improving students’ reading achievement;(2)Students show great interest in using picture books in English reading class.
