Aim:Since the aesthetic standard differs among populations in different regions and between patients and doctors,this study is aiming to compare the laypersons from Northeast China,Xinjiang,and South China,as well as the difference in compare the facial aesthetics between orthodontic patients and orthodontists in Northeast China,which may be beneficial to the optimal clinical decision and effective doctor-patient communication.Methods:Data were collected from 396 laypersons from Northeast China,Xinjiang,and South China by means of a questionnaire survey,including the importance of frontal and lateral aesthetics,overall facial proportions and perfection of individual organs,static and dynamic aesthetics,the influencing factors and aesthetic indicators.Furthermore,the same method was used to collect information from 335 orthodontic patients and 86 orthodontists in Northeast China.The data of the laypersons,patients and orthodontists were compared and analyzed by SPSS21.0 software,χ2 test and Mann-Whitney U test were used,and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results:1.The laypersons from Northeast China,Xinjiang,and South China showed differences in the aesthetic importance of different facial parts.The laypersons from Xinjiang,and South China paid more attention to the aesthetics of the upper face,while the Northeast tended to middle and lower face(P < 0.05).There were no significant differences between the three groups on other options.2.The aesthetic perceptions of different parts of the face and overall facial proportions and perfection of individual organs are affected by gender and age(P <0.05).Men paid more attention to middle face and the perfection of individual organ than women.Juveniles paid more attention to middle and lower face and the perfection of individual organ than adults.3.There was significant difference in treatment goals between orthodontic patients and orthodontists,the patients paid more attention to the aesthetics,while orthodontists tended to function(P < 0.05).4.There was significant difference in perception of external appearance between orthodontic patients and orthodontists,the orthodontists attached more importance to the profile,while the patients chose front look.The orthodontists paid more attention to the lower face,while the patients chose the upper part(P < 0.05).5.There were significant differences in perception of intraoral microscopic aesthetics and lower facial aesthetic factors between orthodontic patients and orthodontists,patients paid more attention to the arch alignment,while the orthodontists preferred a good occlusion.Orthodontists chose the convexity of the profile as the main influence factor of the lower face aesthetics,while the patients chose crowding of the teeth(P < 0.05).6.There was significant difference in aesthetic perception of overall facial proportions and perfection of individual organs between orthodontic patients and orthodontists,most orthodontists preferred a harmonious facial proportion than perfect organs(eyes,nose,etc.)as well as majority of the patients(P < 0.05).There was no significant difference between the two groups on the static and dynamic aesthetics(P >0.05).Conclusions:1.The laypersons from Northeast China,Xinjiang,and South China showed differences in the aesthetic importance of different facial parts,and there were no significant differences between the three groups on other options.2.The aesthetic perceptions of different parts of the face and overall facial proportions and perfection of individual organs are affected by gender and age.3.There were significant differences between orthodontic patients and orthodontists in treatment goals,external appearance and internal oral aesthetics.
