With the development of economy and orthodontic technology, the health and beauty of stomatognathic system has drew much attention. However, with more complex physiological and social psychological characteristics, adult patients are special among orthodontic patients. The perception and expectation of facial aesthetics in orthodontic patients may be different due to different personality traits. Objective:This investigation aims to investigate facial expectation and personality traits of adult orthodontic patients and analyze the possible relationship between them,in order to provide reference for effective prediction and clinical planning. Methods:Select sets of pre-treatment and post-treatment standardized photographs(one frontal, one frontal smiling, one lateral, one lateral smiling, one frontal occlusal and two lateral occlusal)from 12 patients(female 6,male 6,class ?4,class ?4,class ? 4).A panel of 236 adult orthodontic patients from Shandong University Stomatology Hospital were asked to complete the questionnaires, compaired to 30 clinicians. The questionnaire was about the facial expectation and personality traits. Results were statistically analyzed.Results:1.There are significant differences of facial aesthetic expectation between clinicians and adult orthodontic patients. The expectation on good dental appearance in patient group is lower than clinician group, and their expectation on good facial appearance is much higher. The expectation in patient group on good facial appearance and smile aesthetics are higher than good dental appearance.2.Age,education and malocclusion affect patients' facial aesthetic expectation. The aesthetic expectation of young adult with a higher level of education is much higher, and the expectation of class III is much lower.3.The number of orthodontic adults with lower psychoticism scores, middle extroversion scores and lower neuroticism scores were much more, accounted for about 50%.The extroversion scores of both female and male adult patients are higher than the norm, and the psychoticism and neuroticism scores are lower than the norm. There are not significant differences of personality traits between the female and the male.4.The extroversion scores of adult orthodontic patients is negatively correlated with their aesthetic expectation, while the psychoticism and neuroticism scores are positive correlated with it.The aesthetic expectation of introverted unstable patients is higher than others.Multivariate regression analysis shows that extroversion is more important.Conclusions:1.Patients' aesthetic demand is increasing day by day.The aesthetic expectation on facial appearance of young adult with a higher level of education is higher than the others, and they pay close attention to the orthodontic outcome. Therefore,we orthodontic doctors should pay more attention to these patients and try to know their preference for beauty in order to make an individual treatment plan.2.Personality is an important factor affecting patients' facial aesthetic expectation. The extroversion scores of adult orthodontic patients is negatively correlated with their aesthetic expectation, while the psychoticism and neuroticism scores are positive correlated with it.So it is very important for orthodontists to value such patients'personality traits and provide necessary psychological counseling, which can help patients to make a reasonable expectation and improve the satisfaction to avoid medical disputes.
