Study On The Status Of Workplace Violence,Coping Resources And Their Influencing Factors Among Nursing Students

Objective: To investigate the status and coping resources of workplace violence,and influencing factors of workplace violence against nursing students and to provide bases for administrators and educators to formulate intervention measures.Methods: Convenience sampling was used and totally 1110 nursing students from 6 schools in Liaoning Province Shenyang City were investigated with Hospital workplace violence questionnaire(including general information,workplace violence instrument,workplace violence coping resources scale,workplace violence specific situation questionnaire,open question).The influencing factors of nursing students’ workplace violence were analyzed by logistic regression.The multiple linear regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of workplace violence coping resources of nursing students.A quasi-statistical analysis was used to analyze the open questions answered by nursing students.Results: The prevalence of nursing students in Shenyang to workplace violence during their entire internship was 31.45%.High exposure rate.Emotional abuse is the most exposed at 29.6%.Regression analysis showed that not passionate about nursing career(OR=2.133,P=0.002),established or not clear that schools/hospitals don’t have specialized facilities for dealing with violence(OR=1.962,P=0.009),higher knowledge ability were the independent risk factors of workplace violence(OR=1.029,P=0.013).Higher response ability(OR=0.959,P=0.001)and higher level of organizational support(OR=0.909,P=0.004)were the protective factors.The total score of workplace violence coping resources among nursing students was 74.00(59.50,92.00),the total score of ability to know、foresee,cope and organizational support were 24.00(18.00,30.00),17.00(13.00,22.00),26.00(21.00,32.00),8.00(6.00,10.00).The multiple linear regression showed that the gender,age,the locals,whether heard of workplace violence before,the hospital has education or not during the internship,the necessity of workplace violence related education and intervention,whether exposure to workplace violence were the important influencing factors of nursing students’ coping resources with workplace violence.Nursing students described their views on workplace violence from three aspects:"current situation" "perception" "prospect".Conclusion: The situation of workplace violence suffered by nursing students in Shenyang City should be paid more attention to by administrators and educators,and there is room for improvement of coping resources.According to the influencing factors,and the views and appeals of nursing students on workplace violence,managers and educators can take corresponding measures,such as curriculum development and related intervention to improve the coping ability of nursing students with workplace violence and reduce the exposure rate and negative impact of workplace violence.
