Objective:1.To develop a Management of Workplace Violence Competence Assessment Tool among nursing students that would be helpful for nursing educators to assess the level of students‘ competence in violence management.2.To understand the status quo of nursing students‘ competence in violence management and its influencing factors and to explore the students‘ experience of workplace violence management,so as to provide reference for further study in the future.Method:1.Under the guidance of 4R crisis management theory,and based on the existing assessment tools at home and abroad,workplace violence related literature,and workplace violence management guidelines,a pool of assessment tools was developed.2.18 experts were invited to evaluate the assessment tool by Delphi expert consultation and the initial assessment tool was formed after small sample predictive test.3.Item analysis was used screen and select items.Factor analysis and content validity were used to evaluate the validity.Internal consistency reliability and test-retest stability reliability were used to evaluate the reliability.4.Competence in violence management of 797 nursing students from Shanghai,Suzhou,Dali and Nanchang was studied by the assessment tool with convenient sampling method.5.By using phenomenological research method,16 nursing students were interviewed in a semi-structured way and further targeted educational solutions were put forward.Result:1.The Management of Workplace Violence Competence Assessment Tool comprised 39 items in 7 dimensions,namely violence cognition,nurse-patient interaction,utilisation of protective facilities,risk assessment,knowledge renewal,response to violence,and after-the-event recovery.7 factors were extracted by factor analysis,explaining 63.422% of the total explained variance.The content validity index for the assessment tool was 0.898.Cronbach‘s alpha of the assessment tool was 0.955 and test-retest reliability was 0.906.2.The average score of students‘ competence in violence management was(3.77±0.51).The dimensions scored from high to low were knowledge renewal,nurse-patient interaction,after-the-event recovery,response to violence,risk assessment,violence cognition,and utilisation of protective facilities.3.Four themes were extracted from the interview with nursing students: self-improvement in violence cognition,challenge of violence prevention,the deficiency of violence response ability,and the psychological adjustment after violence.Conclusion:1.The Management of Workplace Violence Competence Assessment Tool is a reliable and valid assessment tool that could be used to measure nursing students‘ competence in violence management in our country.It would be helpful for nursing educators to obtain deep understanding of nursing students‘ strengths and weaknesses in violence management,so as to guide nursing colleges and teaching hospitals to carry out training in violence management and to evaluate the training effect.2.Nursing students‘ competence in violence management needs to be improved.Nursing educators should choose appropriate teaching methods and targeted contents to conduct the training from the aspects of violence prevention,response and after-the-event recovery,according to the role characteristics of nursing students,based on the hospital clinical environment,potential risk factors and policy procedure.It is necessary to guide the nursing students to have a correct understanding of workplace violence,so that they can form a positive attitude,improve their response skills,and promote the positive transformation of their psychological state,so as to reduce the occurrence and harm of workplace violence.
