ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to understand the current status of suicidal ideation, bullying and mental health of middle school students,to explore the influence of bullying on suicidal ideation of middle school students, and to analyze the mediating and moderating effects of mental health on the relationship between bullying and suicidal ideation in middle school students. It is expected to provide a scientific basis for improving the physical and mental health of middle school students and promoting their healthy growth.MethodsA stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select respondents from36 primary, middle and high schools in Nanyang,Xinxiang and Anyang of Henan Province.A total of 11,672 students from the above 36 schools were investigated by using self-made questionnaires on bullying status of primary and middle school students, mental health scale of middle school students and suicidal ideation items.SPSS 21.0 was used for descriptive analysis, independent sample t-test and Pearson correlation analysis, and Process 3.4 was used to test the mediating and moderating effects.Results1.In this study,7,654 subjects were included, including 4,028 male students, accounting for 52.6%,and 3,626 female students, accounting for 47.4%.The subjects were between the ages of 12 and 19,with a mean age of 15.03±1.71 years. There are3,866 junior high school students, accounting for 50.5%,and 3,788 senior high school students, accounting for 49.5%.Three thousand nine hundred and eighty-six people are boarding at school, accounting for 52.1%,and 3,668 are not boarding at school, accounting for 47.9%.One thousand four hundred and sixteen people are only children, accounting for 18.5%,and 6,238 are non-only children, accounting for 81.5%.2.In the included study sample, the number of middle school students reported suicidal ideation was 662,accounting for 8.6% of the total sample, the difference of suicidal ideation in gender(P<0.001)was statistically significant. The number of middle school students who reported being victims of traditional bullying was 932,accounting for 12.2%,and the difference of traditional bullying in gender(P<0.001)was statistically significant. The number of middle school students who reported cyberbullying was 391,accounting for 5.1%.The differences of cyberbullying in gender(P<0.001),boarding(P=0.040)and only child(P=0.020)were statistically significant. The detection rate of mental health problems in middle school students was24.9%,and a total of 1,904 people had mental health problems. The differences of mental health in age(P<0.001),school period(P<0.001),boarding(P<0.001)and only child(P<0.001)were statistically significant.3.The results of correlation analysis showed that the traditional bullying of middle school students was positively correlated with mental health(r=0.430,P<0.01)and suicidal ideation(r=0.337,P<0.01).Cyberbullying was positively correlated with mental health(r=0.172,P<0.01)and suicidal ideation(r=0.213,P<0.01).Mental health was positively correlated with suicidal ideation(r=0.303,P<0.01).4.The traditional bullying of middle school students had a significant positive predictive effect on suicidal ideation(β=0.346,P<0.001),while the cyberbullying had a statistically significant positive predictive effect on suicidal ideation(β=0.224,P<0.001).5.The results showed that mental health had a mediating effect on the relationship between traditional bullying and suicidal ideation of middle school students, and the mediating effect accounted for 18.8% of the total effect.Mental health had a mediating effect on the relationship between cyberbullying and suicidal ideation of middle school students, and the mediating effect accounted for 19.7% of the total effect.6.The results of moderating effect showed that the interaction between traditional bullying and mental health had a significant predictive effect on suicidal ideation(P<0.001).Mental health had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between traditional bullying and suicidal ideation. The interaction between cyberbullying and mental health had a significant predictive effect on suicidal ideation(P<0.001),and mental health had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between cyberbullying and suicidal ideation.Conclusions1.The detection rates of suicide ideation, traditional bullying and cyber bullying among middle school students in Henan Province were all at a low level on the whole, but the mental health problems were not optimistic. There are differences in suicidal ideation, traditional bullying, cyberbullying and mental health among middle school students in gender, age, school period and boarding.2.Both traditional bullying and cyberbullying of middle school students have significant positive predictive effects on suicidal ideation.3.Mental health played a partial mediating role in the relationship between traditional bullying, cyberbullying and suicidal ideation of middle school students.Mental health had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between traditional bullying, cyberbullying and suicidal ideation of middle school students.
