As the process of urbanization has shifted from incremental to activating stock, people began to pay attention to the excavation and exploration of urban historical context. The historical block carries historical memory of a city.It displays the development track, socioeconomic development, local environment and the trend of regional culture of the city in different periods. It is the gathering point of a city’s urban memory. However,in the context of the current urban development, the protection and renovation of historical blocks appear to be slightly and ignoring the local attributes of the blocks, and what replaced them are the monotonous commercial blocks therefore the urban memory of the blocks is lost.Jieyang,a famous historic city in Guangdong Province, retains many historical relics in the ancient city.Among them, the Jieyang Zhongshan Qilou Street Historic District is a historical block with nearly a-hundred-year history, which contains the historical culture of the ancient city of Jieyang. However, the current situation of the district can no longer meet the needs of urban development and cause the loss of its vitality. The article adopts historical blocks as the research object, and explores the design principles and methods of the micro-renovation of historical blocks from the perspective of urban memory protection.Through the protective renovation of the Jieyang Zhongshan Qilou Street Historic District, the specific measures of the micro-renovationof the historic district were summarized, and finally reached to continue the historical context of the district, stimulate the vitality of the district, and protect the urban memory contained in the district to manifest urban culture and memory further.Firstly, the article elaborates the theoretical background, sorts out the relevant theories and conceptual explanations involved in the research scope, clarifies the specific definitions of urban memory, historic blocks and micro-renovation,and provides theoretical support for design practices.Secondly, three representative historical districts in Guangzhou,Foshan, and Guilin are selected for case comparison study, the existing problems are summarized, and the similarities and differences between renovation methods and urban memory protection are proposed. Finally, taking Jieyang Zhongshan Qilou Street Historic District as an example, the article analyzes the function of the block and the memory of the city, and summarizes the current situation of the block.Explore the design principles and methods of the micro-renovation of the historical district, and clarify its design goals.Through the design and research of the Jieyang Zhongshan Qilou Street Historic District, from the two aspects, the function of the block and the urban memory, some specific measures of the micro-renovation are proposed, including the restoration and improvement of functions and the urban memory’s protection and inheritance to continue the culture of Jieyang Zhongshan Qilou Street Historic District and regenerate the vitality of the block thus the urban memory is protected.
