Historic districts are an important part of the city’s historical and cultural resources.Different from other historical and cultural resources, historic districts are not only the material carrier of urban history and culture, but also the important space of residents’ lives and activities and the functions in the city.It is precisely because of this that when renovating historic districts,it will inevitably involve social, economic, and cultural aspects, including not only the preservation of history and culture, the improvement of the space environment, the development of the urban economy, but also the life of residents, etc. In the past, studies on historic districts mainly focused on material aspects such as historic buildings and neighborhood patterns, and there were few concerns about non-material aspects. With the development of relevant research and theories, people have become more aware of the value of historic districts, and historic district reconstruction has no longer seen cultural protection as the only goal.Instead,it combines the protection of historic blocks with the development of cities. It has become an element of promotion in urban social and economic development.Domestic and foreign existing cases show that the combination of protection and utilization is a correct and effective practice in the reconstruction of historic districts. How to think about the historic district as a whole, combine the design of the building and operation to protect the culture and stimulate the vitality of the area,it is worth the architect to think deeply.Only in this way can we effectively combine the protection and utilization of the entire life cycle of a historic district. This article starts with relevant theories about the transformation of historic districts at home and abroad, and combines current studies of the conservation and use of historic neighborhoods by a large number of scholars at home and abroad, defines the relationship and principles of protection and utilization, then sorts out and summarizes an effective way to protect and utilize the historic districts in Guangzhou after reconstruction.: using economic development as a means to inherit culture and improve living conditions of residents.Through in-depth research on the micro-reconstruction project of the Yongqingfang Historic District in Guangzhou, with a fully understanding of its protection and utilization, this paper tries to analyze the problems encountered in architecture, commerce and culture. At the same time, interviews were conducted among the three groups of major users of Yongqingfang, including local residents, tourists, and shopkeepers,to understand the demographic characteristics and cognitive evaluation of users at Yongqingfang, and to analyze Yongqingfang’s other deficiencies. In the end,the deficiencies and advantages revealed in the protection and utilization of Yongqingfang were summarized through analysis, which provided reference for the protection and renovation of other similar historic districts in cities.
