The combination of modernist architecture and traditional Chinese culture has always been the direction for Chinese architects to study.China’s first generation of architecture such as Liang Sicheng and Yang Tingbao made their own efforts in this direction and produced many excellent achievements and works.Guan Zhaoye studied under Liang Sicheng and Lin Whei-yin,and then,as a professor of Architecture apartment of Tsinghua University, nurtured a great many of the pillars of contemporary architectural circles, and played an important role in the development of modern architecture in China.Guan Zhaoye summed up his design philosophy as ‘appropriateness’.The design works based on this thought are concerned with the whole environment, and they conform to the context. The Tsinghua Xuetang extension project, which has lasted nearly 20 years,is a concentrated expression of Guan Zhaoye’s ‘appropriateness’ architectural design philosophy. This thesis will focuses on the idea of his appropriateness’ architectural design philosophy, analyze the background and process of the thought, analyze the content and core of the thought, and analyze the application and embodiment of the thought.Besides, through the analysis of the specific design process of the design scheme for the extension of the Tsinghua Xuetang, the author reveals how the ‘appropriateness’ architectural design philosophy are carried out and guide the development of the design. The source of ‘appropriateness’ is China’s ‘harmonious’ cultural thought. Its connotation includes: 1.conforms to the grade of architecture;2.conforms to the type, nature and economic conditions of the building;3.conforms to the harmony with the surrounding environment.Starting with the formation of this design idea, this paper explores the origin and formation process of the ‘appropriateness’ design philosophy from the three stages of his family’s influence, domestic study experience and international visits. In view of the embodiment of ‘appropriateness’ architectural design philosophy in Guan Zhao’s design works, this thesis selects several excellent design works to analyze these from four aspects: 1.to determine the location of its place at the beginning stage;2.to establish a harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment in the overall layout stage;3.to form the order for relationship of all parts of the building in the design stage;4.to design details in response to contextual connections in detail design stage.Tsinghua Xuetang is a national key cultural relic protection unit. Its expansion design requires not only to coordinate the existing buildings, but also to meet the current needs. The author had the honor to participate in the project and received the personal guidance of Guan Zhaoye. In advancing the design work, the author deeply realized how the ‘appropriateness’ architectural design philosophy was applied to every aspect of the design. This thesis introduces four main spaces, which are designed by author,in Tsinghua Xuetang extension project: the hall, the round table hall, the underground cafe and the sunken courtyard. In the hall design,it emphasizes the high level of the shared hall and the connection to the commanders of the various parts;in the design of the round table hall, the atmosphere and space scale are constructed for high level conference;in the design of the underground cafe,a relaxed environment are created;in the design of the sunken courtyard, the sunken courtyard serve as a foil to the original Tsinghua Xuetang.
