In China,as the economy keep booming, people’s demand for high-quality healthcare service is growing.Yet the over-crowded,chaotic and sometimes literally deafening public hospitals fail to answer to that demand. This problem is especially prominent when it comes to children’s hospital.Based on the project of shanghai wanke children’s hospital, this article focuses on outpatient clinic design with due consideration given to interior acoustic quality.Since the issue is related to the distribution of sound sources in the entire building, and the sound-absorbing performance of each room, the task is split into 2 subordinate ones that deal with these 2 factors separately,in 2 phases of architectural design process. In the concept design phase, connections between the layout of an outpatient clinic and the distribution of its sound sources are revealed.Comparative design research were done to achieve an optimum layout. In the design development phase, the focus moves on to the shape of the project’s feature waiting room and the material use in it.Different ways were discussed to improve the shape of this room, and means like computer simulation are applied to justify an acoustically friendly interior design. In sum, this article integrates acoustical consideration into the entire process of designing an outpatient clinic, which provides knowledge for future designers, while at the same time demonstrates a viable solution to this tricky problem.
