An Analysis Of Chen Jiyu's Innovative Thoughts In The Coastal Estuary Proiect

Chen Jiyu(1921-2017)is not only the chief architect of China's estuary and coast discipline system,but also a pioneer in applying estuary and coast theory to engineering practice.Research into Chen Jiyu's innovative ideas in the study of estuaries and coasts is of great significance because it not only provides a window into the innovative ideas of independent Chinese scientists in modern times,but also contributes to the inheritance and promotion of scientific spirit.Approaching the topic from the history of scientific thought,this thesis conducts a case study on the innovative ideas embodied in Chen Jiyu's research on estuary and coast on the basis of his relevant scholarly works,with special attention paid to the sources of these innovative ideas.Firstly,careful analysis of Chen Jiyu's scholarly works from a dynamic perspective suggests that his innovative ideas represent a multidisciplinary comprehensive study of the estuary and coast in China.The emergence of these innovative ideas coincided with traditional Chinese geomorphological research hitting its bottleneck,and the introduction of advanced western research ideas into China.For the first time,Chen Jiyu introduced dynamics into estuary and coastal research,and advocated a research approach representing a hybrid of“dynamics,sedimentation and geomorphology".His contributions are characterized by a distinctive multidisciplinary perspective of dynamics and helped break new grounds for the study of estuaries and coasts in China.Secondly,this thesis traces the sources of Chen Jiyu's innovative ideas in estuary and coastal research.Chen Jiyu is a typical intellectual who embodies the joint influence of western science and technology and traditional Eastern ideas.The emergence of his innovative thinking in estuary and costal research is attributable to three sources of influence:his training at the Department of History and Geography of Zhejiang University,his critical absorption of advanced ideas and theories of Soviet and Western estuary and coast scientists,and his personal research and practical experience.His innovative ideas represent both an inheritance of existing wisdom and systematic innovation on his own.Finally,the impact of Chen Jiyu's innovative ideas on the research and practice of estuaries and coasts in China is explored.His innovative ideas not only added greater depths to the research on the dynamic theory of estuary and coast in China,but also increased the diversity of China's estuary and coast management.Besides,a generation of scientists with new idea in scientific research has been cultivated under his influence.His scientific and innovative ideas provide a dynamic perspective for the engineering practice of contemporary estuary and coastal research in China,and continue to enlighten current estuary and coastal research and practice.
