Abstract/Summary:
The information needs of the medical community are not met by current medical information systems and the paradigms upon which these models are based. As the nature of health care changes from an organizational focus to a patient, or client oriented focus, it has become apparent that a fresh approach to the design and implementation of health care systems is needed. In an attempt to address this need, we have proposed a development cycle based on scalable client-server technology utilizing a graphical user interface. These tools were used in conjunction with a rapid application development (RAD) methodology to create a health record system based on a client orientation. This project represents a first phase prototype of a health record system based on a data model as defined by medical, rather than information system professionals.
