Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is concerned with theories of critical media pedagogy and their practical implications for media education at the senior secondary school level. I have chosen the subject of studying media stars and the phenomenon of stardom as a curriculum development project in which to apply strategies of media study.;I explain the reasons for studying media stars and outline the conceptual approaches and theoretical content of this work. Corresponding teaching materials and strategies are developed. A case study of the film star Jodie Foster is used as an example of how a star's image can be examined along with suggestions for classroom work and student assignment.;The consideration of the cultural phenomenon of stardom involves working out the connections between the related elements of text, production, and audience. These are studied from various interdependent perspectives which look into the role stars play in producing meanings, desires, and identities for audience.
