Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is an exploration of the philosophies expressed in the architecture and furniture of the Arts & Crafts Movement. The goal was to determine how the characteristics from this period could be used in architectural design utilizing engineered wood. By employing the elements at the core of this philosophy, a school for wood craft was designed that interprets these Arts and Crafts principles while incorporating engineered wood technologies. With the characteristics of the Arts and Crafts as a catalyst, the design of the detail becomes the project focus.;Through this thesis investigation, it became evident that craftsmanship would be an essential element to the design application. Concentrating the design on the construction of the detail allowed the Arts and Crafts Movement's philosophy to be conveyed through engineered wood techniques. The application of this thesis concluded that the qualities of the Arts and Crafts could be expressed in modern wood architecture when appropriately applied.
